What can a copywriter do for your small business?

by Monique Bruggeman, A Virtual Copywritying Monstar.

Isn’t it funny that when you’ve been working in your business and industry for so long, you assume people know what you do?

And it’s not until you’re met with blank stares or questions that you realise people may not have even heard about what you do, or know it had a title.

When I say I’m a copywriter, I often get, ‘Oh, so you do that little legal c in a circle thing?’.

Close, but no. That copyright.

In a nutshell, a copywriter is someone who is trained in the art of writing words that sell.

And copywriting is a combo of marketing, sales, psychology, communication and conversations. I like to say that I’m the person who gets inside your head, pulls out all that information you can’t articulate, and then spins it into an online conversation you’ll have with your audience.

And that’s what every business needs yeah? To be having conversations with their customers. There is so much power in copywriting, especially in an online, or virtual world.

I like to say that I’m the person who gets inside your head, pulls out all that information you can’t articulate, and then spins it into an online conversation you’ll have with your audience. Mon Eddy, Copywriter.

Why you should have a copywriter on your business team

Because you’re smart and want sales for starters!

And because you want to create genuine connections with your audience. Unless you love writing and being creative and have a marketing background, you’re probably like most business owners and don’t exactly know how to promote yourself.

That’s normal FYI.

Most clients that I work with are super passionate about their business. They could talk for hours about it. But when it comes to writing that down, they fumble, and their message (and passion) is lost.

That’s what a highly skilled copywriter does for you. They listen. They pick up on things that you say. They know the passion you have for your business. They pull everything out of your head (your vision, your values, the problems you solve).

Then they portray that to the world through words.

And yes, it is something you need to be trained in. And a skill that gets honed as the years go by.

Copywriting is everywhere in a business

Most people use a copywriter when they need one. However, once you start working with a copywriter, I guarantee you’ll find so many uses for them and come back time and time again.

Imagine, for example; you’re asked to write a short bio for a presentation you’re giving, or for an online directory for your business. You could sit there for hours trying to write about yourself without sounding like a naff, or you could flick an email to your copywriter and say, ‘Help me sound amazing please’.

Here are some ideas of what you can outsource to a copywriter:

  • Website pages – for a spruce up, rewrite or revision
  • SEO tags – to make sure you’re getting Google love
  • Blogs – to keep connected with your audience and getting SEO juice
  • eBooks – either writing from scratch or picking through blogs to create winning content
  • Product descriptions – to make sure they’re fun, along with using SEO principles to be found online
  • Social media – for your profile bios, content and posts
  • Emailers – from subtle promotions or sales funnels through to change in business emails (rate rises, COVID changes etc.)
  • And pretty much anything you need to write for your business

You'll need to find a Copywriter you click with. Why? Because I’m going to be getting inside your head and asking you a whole heap of questions (I’m always gentle BTW – gentler than a COVID test!). Mon Eddy.

You’ll need to find a copywriter you click with

I think this is incredibly important.

Why? Because I’m going to be getting inside your head and asking you a whole heap of questions (I’m always gentle BTW – gentler than a COVID test!).

When you work with a copywriter, they will need a brief from you. This can be done in writing, over the phone, or both (I prefer both). When you’re working with an experienced copywriter, you may feel like they’re drilling you.

Don’t worry; they won’t give away any secrets.

But they do need to know how you tick and what makes your product unique and sellable compared to others. If you’re not on the same page, or you don’t click with your copywriter, you’ll find that they won’t feel the passion you have for your business. As a result, they won’t be able to write copy that speaks to your audience.

Sure, it may be ok and written using all the right principles. But it will lack heart, and I’m a big believer that your audience will feel this too.

All the big businesses have copywriters in-house

Big companies employ copywriters in-house. They have dedicated writers who purely work with them and get their brand and voice out to the world each day.

But just because you’re a smaller business doesn’t mean you should miss out.

In this virtual world, you’ll find copywriters are more than happy to work with you when they’re needed – as a contractor. When you have a project or need something written, you’ll be quoted for that job and pay accordingly. You don’t need to have a copywriter full-
time.

So, what are you waiting for? Buddy up with a copywriter and start writing words that influence people.
