Register a business name
You can register your businessin your own name, or register a new name for your business. It is important to ensure that your chosen business name is not already in use by another company. I highly recommend exploring trademark options for your business, to ensure that other's dont use the same name.

Obtain an ABN
You can apply for an ABN without much difficulty from the ATO website. You can also register for GST at the ATO website if you would like to, or you believe your business turnover will exceed $75,000
An ABN is required for invoicing purposes and should be requested as soon as possible after determining that you would like to start a business.

Business Registration in South Africa
In South Africa business registration is done through the Deeds office in Pretoria. You can apply through agents/tax consultants/accountants who offer business registration or you can do the procedure yourself, the difference is in the price.
I went through my tax consultant, I filled in the relevant forms and choose 3 business names to register and my consultant delivered it to the Deeds Office, it takes roughly 6 weeks, my tax consultant contacted me again with my registration papers, I registered as a close corporation.
You can get information from the SARS (Tax Office) website, and the DTI, Department of Trade and Industry website about registration and procedure.
